Torque Converter
Many of the problems we've seen with the 2003 Ford Windstar relate to the Torque Converter. What is a torque converter and what does it control?

If you've read about manual transmissions, you know that an engine is connected to a transmission by way of a clutch. Without this connection, a car would not be able to come to a complete stop without killing the engine. But cars with an automatic transmission have no clutch that disconnects the transmission from the engine. Instead, they use an amazing device called a torque converter. It may not look like much, but there are some very interesting things going on inside.

torque converterA torque converter consists of three mechanical parts — a pump, a turbine, and a stator. The pump is attached to directly to the engine, and spins at the same speed as the motor. Inside the pump are many fins, which, as the pump spins, direct hydraulic fluid outward to the turbine. The turbine then spins at close to the same speed as the engine, but in the opposite direction. The spinning of the turbine causes the transmission to rotate and drive the wheels. The hydraulic fluid exits the turbine at its center, moving in the direction opposite to how it was forced in by the pump.

Erratic Shifting
Check the transmission fluid level. Windstars have problems with the o-ring seal at the back of the tranny and are prone to slow leaks. Shifting problems are sometimes the result of low fluid levels. If that doesn't work, there may be a vacuum value sticking somewhere in the tranny.

Please include all labor parts to rebuild, new torque converter, cooler flush, warranty offered, etc.

We have a 2003 Windstar LX. Yesterday went to take off from a light it got up to about 30 mph, then the engine just started racing. I also found the the OD fuse was blown. Put an new fuse in put it in gear and it popped the fuse. It will not move in reverse or drive.

I have a 2003 Windstar that appears to have a trans problem. Below are three sinero's of what it is doing. 1. Hard exceleration it seems to want to change gears and studders and seems to not shift for a few moments.

2. on the interstate and I only seem to notice this with the cruise on. if there is a hill that may require it to drop out of overdrive it studders. if you hit the gas it goes away.

3. Driving around town at slow speeds and it goes up a hill that may require a down shift it studder again.

usually with all of the above if i let off the gas for a secound it goes away. On the intersate if i give it more gas it seems to help it down shift and the studder goes away. I may be using the wrong word to describe what it is doing. Other then this it seems to be working fine. This may be trival, but the button on the gear selector to manualy take it out of overdrive does not work.

I did have the fluid an filter changed and it was better for a while and then it came back.

It also does not do this all of the time.

Thanks in advace for any advise you can give.

I have a 2003 windstar i recently purchased and it shifts hard into second(sometimes), slighty leaking fluid only after long drives(between oilpan and tran pan), O\D light flashes after 20-30 miles. I have used a scan tool and recieved the code P0741 for "torque converter clutch solenoid circuit performance or stuck off". I've read several forums in regards to this wonderful transmission ford built, and seems there is no remedy other then rebuild. Even after the rebuild it breaks again. Other then getting rid of this piece of crap whats the best route to go?

Sounds like the torque converter broke is the fluid level high? Only three thing can be broke a oil pump broken pump shaft or the torque converter any of these thing you would have to remove the transmission to repair
