2002 Acura TL Transmission Repair Charlotte NCThe Acura TL is a mid-size luxury car from Honda's luxury division that debuted in 1996. The Acura TL was named the "3.2TL" after its 3.2-liter engine during its second generation of production (1999 to 2003). Potential buyers--as well as owners--of the 3.2TL should take note of its common transmission problems. (See photos on the right of an actual 2002 Acura TL Transmission, out of the vehicle and being disassembled for rebuild.)

Affecting about 2% of the TLs from model year 2000 to early 2003 (those only with VINs less than xxxxxx19000), the TL transmissions have been known to fail. Acura had extended the warranty on the transmission to 7 years for those TLs affected, which expired in early 2010. There are still many 2002 Acura 3.2TL's out there with transmission problems, so what do you do if you have a transmission problem and what causes it?

2002 Acura TL Transmission Repair Charlotte NC 1Most transmission failures begin to manifest themselves as quirky cold weather performance. It begins with hard up-shifting/down-shifting, delayed shifting and excess RPM. These transmissions are heavily dependent upon fluid pressure to regulate performance, and the sensor failures that commonly occur with these transmissions disrupt that pressure, leading rapidly to transmission demolition.

"Jerking while driving" and "Transmission gears slipping" most common transmission problems and complaints specifically with the 2002 Acura 3.2TL. To check for the cause of any transmission slippage -- the first thing you can do is to check your transmission fluid level. If the transmission fluid is full or smells burnt, that is the first sign that you may have a severe problem internally with your transmission. Transmission fluid should always be red in color, and needs to be replaced when it turns dark or black. Burnt transmission fluid is a easy signal that there is a transmission problem. Low transmission fluid can also cause severe transmission problems. If your fluid is low or has any of these problems, please contact us at 704-821-3460 to schedule an appointment for service or transmission testing.

I'm an owner of an Acura TL 2002 w/less than 35,000 miles and was feeling that it didn't always shift into 2nd gear & the check engine light came on. It was just diagnosed & Acura wants $4100.00 to replace. Since, I'm the only driver and owned this car from 2002 I feel that they should fix it FREE. There was a recall in 2004 & not even sure if they replaced anything but, I feel this is a defect. I have been in touch w/ the main office and they have not gotten back to me yet. Can you adivse me please.

I own an Acura 3.2cl coupe which I bought new in 2001 for 31,000!!!. At 53,000 the trans failed and reverse would not engage. I have since discovered that trans failures early on honda's are a common occurence. I was sent a service bulletin from honda to have the trans inspected in 2005 and took it in. Because this car is now 10 years old but still in perfect condition, Honda says I'm out of the 7 year 100,000 extended warranty period. My personal mechanic is going to replace the trans at a cost of 3,500. Honda should be ashamed of themselves. They knew these transmissions had problems but convinced the government not to issue a recall. Do yourself a favor. Never buy a Honda. They are a bunch of thieves and do not care about you as a consumer.

I have a 2003 acura 3.2 TL. I bought this car when it had 48,000 miles on it, and now has 107,000. I have been having transmission problems for about 6 months now..gears are slipping, hesitation while increasing speed. unfortunately im also out of the extended warranty period and need some good advice on what to do..If Honda knew of these problems they should be willing to fix the problems,,no questions asked..

I have 2003 TL type S. I bought it from private seller and car drove good and strong for 2 days. Suddenly now, the transmission not only slips, it will not accelerate once it gets to 3rd gear. I have to pull off road. If I turn car off and back on it goes into gear just fine, but once I start up road, same exact thing happens. If I do not re-start car, it will not go into gear, nor will it reverse. Only when I shut motor off, will it decide to go into gear, which like I said, only last until I start going up road again. Someone told me that it sounded like a sensor or computer module problem that tells the tranny when to shift?

I have an 02 TL-S with 130K. The transmission was replaced at 60K back in '06 under warranty. Recently D5 start blinking and delayed shifting are happening. Several times the tranny seemed to down shift abruptly when the car was coming to a stop. Today the reverse seemed to slip. Any advise would be appreciated! Also, any idea roughly how much it costs to fix the tranny? Thanks!
