4L60E Transmission Rebuild | Charlotte NCWhat is a 4L60E Transmission?

The 4L60-E is an automatic shift, four-speed overdrive, longitudinally positioned transmission. It has been considered to be the best rendition of the finest overdrive automatic transmission ever produced. The 4L60-E is found in nearly every GM rear-wheel-drive application, including the C/K Truck, Sonoma, Jimmy, Tahoe, Yukon, Astro, Safari, Suburban, Bravada, Firebird, Camaro and Corvette

Before the Late 4L60-E transmission, there was the Turbo 700R, which was introduced in 1982. The 4L60-E is GM's successful continuation of the ever-improving 700R4 (aka "4L60" since 1990), introduced in 1982. The 4L60-E is the "E"lectronically shift controlled version of the 4L60. The Late 4L60-E was released in 1997 in and fully phased into wide use through GM by 1998 in both RWD car platforms (including the C6 Corvette) and trucks in both 2wd and 4wd configurations. (Most transmission models are not distinctively noted with the "E" since all GM transmissions are now also controlled electronically.)

The 4L60E Transmission has went through many changes/improvements over the years since it first came out in 1982. From bells to valve bodies, added solenoids, changes in pump and convertors. The 4L60E transmission weighs 146 pounds dry, and 162 wet. It requires 8.4 quarts (9.64" torque converter) or 11.4 quarts (11.81" torque converter) of transmission fluid,

Top 30 Common 4L60E Transmission Problems and Repair

Below is a list of common transmission problems with the GM 4L60E Transmission and possible solutions to repair. Although you may have some of these symptoms / problems with your 4L60E Transmission, the repair solution may differ. This list is merely a guide to the possible solutions. For a complete diagnosis on your GM 4L60E Transmission problem, contact us for a Free Diagnostic.

1. Slow, slipping or no reverse: “lo-reverse” clutches are worn out, fluid leak in the reverse apply circuit, or broken sunshell. It is possible to remedy a fluid problem by removing the checkball from its cage in the case in the rear of the transmission may help (must remove valve body), or adding a high-viscosity additive or other seal restorer product. May also have worn boost valve (can replace in the pan).

2. 1-2 shift does not happen at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) until you let off the gas: Best case: try replacing the TPS. Middle case: leak in the 2nd gear apply circuit (servo assembly or 1-2 accumulator). Double check by using the pressure gauge and watch for a big drop when the PCM commands 2nd gear. Worst case: poor line pressure rise (see below).

3. 1-2 Shift shudder at WOT (Wide Open Throttle); delayed or abnormal 1-2 shift; There's a problem ONLY on the 1-2 shift: 1-2 accumulator piston cracked or stuck cocked in the bore. Check the yellow spring inside the accum housing for breakage. Also, if the accumulator housing walls are scored, the housing must be replaced.

4. 1-2 shift is delayed and harsh, may not shift into OD: TPS needs to be checked for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If not, this must be replaced.

5. Trans does not upshift out of first, speedometer reads zero at all times: Could be VSS failure. Rear of transmission needs to be fixed. Transmission needs to come out in order to access VSS.

6. No 3rd or 4th gear: “3-4” clutches are worn out: Needs to be removed and rebuilt. The car is safe to drive (in 2) until you can get it fixed.

7. Sudden grinding noise with no prior warning primarily in 2nd gear, behavior in reverse may be abnormal: sunshell is fractured. Must be removed and rebuilt. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

8. 1st and 3rd only, no 2,4 or R: Sunshell is fractured or splines are sheared off. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

9. No 2nd or 4th gear. 2-4 band is slipping: Servo seals may be damaged. Otherwise, 2-4 band is worn out. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt.

10. Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the underhood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.

11. No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter: ShiftA solenoid failed Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans or PCM. Needs diagnostic testing.

12. Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: A wiring problem from PCM to transmission or PCM.

13. No TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) lockup: Brake pedal switches improperly adjusted (always on), TCC solenoid failed, TCC clutch worn out (must remove transmission and replace TC).

14. TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) always locked: TCC apply solenoid circuit shorted to ground, TCC solenoid blockage, or TC broken (must remove trans and replace TC).

15. Horrible noise in 4th and feels like the brakes are on: overrun clutches are applying due to a cracked or leaking forward piston. Overrun clutches will be worn out after 30 seconds of this behavior. Car can be safely driven in D. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt.

16. Soft shifting, gradual performance degradation: Poor line pressure rise due to leaking boost valve, clogged EPC filter screen, failing EPC solenoid, or worst case: leaky seals throughout. Seal restorer may fix last problem, but probably remove and rebuild needed.

17. No forward movement in OD or D, but L2, L1 and R work: Forward sprag is broken. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

18. Extremely harsh shifts from P or N, normal shifts at WOT: EPC (Electronic Pressure Control) solenoid failed. Fix as soon as possible or hard parts will eventually break.

19. Loud bang, grinding sound, loss of all gears, and a binding driveshaft: Snapped output shaft. Try to wiggle driveshaft - if more than 0.020" play, that's the sign. Must be removed and transmission rebuilt.

20. Trans seems noisy when moving in 1st and Reverse, noise goes away instantly if you shift to N or the transmission goes into 3rd gear: Reaction planetary is worn out due to high miles or insufficient lubrication. Not a critical failure, but not a good sign either. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt, sooner rather than later.

21. No movement in any gear: pump failure, or total loss of fluid. Remove transmission and rebuild, or refill pan and find the leak. If out of fluid, avoid running the engine until the transmission is refilled to avoid pump damage. To check for pump failure, check fluid level with the engine off, then start the engine and recheck fluid level. If level does not go down when engine is running, the pump is broken.

22. Transmission does not shift automatically, only manually. New PCM, check wiring, check other sensors such as VSS and TPS.

23. 3rd gear starts, can manually shift through all gears. When car has been turned off for a bit, then back on it will run normally.: VSS dropoff w/ Hi-stall converter. The rpms are too high, but VSS is showing no movement. Happens after a tire burning take-off. Doesn't store a code, will not throw a CEL (I've heard that it will store a code if it happens 3 or more times). Cure: Reprogram PCM for VSS dropoff.

24. Fluid leak out of the front of trans where the converter connects; partial or full loss of movement: Front pump bushing walked out. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt. May have to replace converter also if hub is scored. Note that a leaking front seal usually means the bushing is walking out.

25. Torque converter shudder in 4th while lockup is engaged; problem goes away when the brake pedal is pressed slightly to unlock converter: Need to verify line pressure, and provided no valves in the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) hydraulic circuit are worn, replace the torque converter.

26. Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check TPS for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS (Throttle position sensor).

27. All fluid pumped out through the vent tube: Plugged cooler line. Flush the transmission cooler and cooler lines. Also could be overfiled transmission.

28. Car acts like it's in OD in neutral, car is locked stationary in R, engine feels loaded in P, all four forward positions work fine: Transmission must be removed and rebuilt. Internal crossleak feeding the forward clutches all the time. Most likely a cracked input housing, or cracked forward piston means forward clutches are fused together. Car can safely be driven gently in forward gears until the repair.

29. Needle bearings in the pan, first gear and/or reverse may be noisy: Either a torrington bearing or a planetary bearing is on its way out. Transmission will eventually die a loud, catastrophic death. Cheaper to rebuild now (saves further damage to hard parts), but requires removal and rebuild. It is drivable until it breaks.

30. 1-2 or 2-3 shift is slow/soft above part throttle: Transmission is on its way out. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt.

I'm building a 400 SBC to put in my short wheel base full size truck. It has a nice 4L60E in it now. Is this transmission OK for this application? Does it need a shift kit?

I have a 92 GMC Sierra 1500 4X4 I just recently rebuilt my 4l60e cause of loss of 1st gear but when I rebuilt it everything looked great all the steel and gears looked good seals and band great condition so me and my brother in law re did it all in about a week after work I bought a whole new rebuilt kit for around $125got a teflon band and everything we checked the pressure to see if it all was well and made extra sure everything worked after all that hard work we put everything back together and back in in a days work come to find out same darn problem what could it be he thought the torque converter was bad even before reverse was normal but 1st gear always felt sluggish and it didn't have that power it had before and never got out of 1st gear it seemed. it was a tad low in fluid but knowing how bad it was slipping fluid couldn't be the problem what are somethings I could look into doing at this point with a newly rebuilt tray but still having the same problem is it the torque converter??? is it a bad PCM or what I'm lost and need my everyday transportation back up and running ASAP I've poured just about all my dough in a overhaul kit I didn't need cause everything looked good so if anyone can help me or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it

I have a 96 blazer with the 4l60e. When i put my truck in reverse my vehicle shudders badly for a bit until i give it half throttle, it also acts like the breaks are beaing aplled. But doesnt in any other gear. I can remove my tranmission fuse in dashboard and it doesnt shudder. I also have a leak somewhere on top of it on passenger side. This has puzzled alot of mechanics and none can give a answer.
Posted @ Thursday, July 07, 2011 5:57 PM by Jason bowers
transmission shudders when converter is locked up in 3rd. only does this in third and only when shift lever is placed in 3rd. shudder goes away when you give it gas and the converter unlocks.

I have a 1993 chevy truck 20,000 0n rebuilt 4l60-e that lost 3-4 going at highway speed. 1-2 & reverse still work. Dropped pan and fluid was clean no debris at all just alittle clutch sludge in bottom of pan. My tps went out the day before and I replaced it. But now all scans look normal. Can a bad solinoid cause this issue? I belive this acts like electrical.

I have a 97 Tahoe. My transmission will only run in reverse. It will not give any error codes. If I unplug the harness the vehicle will function in 3rd gear. 1st and 2nd will not work not even in manual. The vehicle will actually pick up speed up to 50mph or more with no problem. If I plug the harness back in the vehicle will not run again and will only run in reverse. I've cleaned the harness and no luck. I get no error codes.

I have a 4L60E 1st and Reverse are the only Working Gears. Pulled the Transmission noticed that the 2\4th Band is Cracking and worn badly. Could this be the Problem ? Everything else seems ok. Havent pulled the ValveBody or anyof the Clutch Packs apart yet, although they appear to be ok and look new. Please advise.

just drove down to the beach pulling a small john boat. Lost 3rd and 4th gear and once it shifted into 3rd she went into neutral. After consulting with a great transmission mechanic he called out number 6 in the top 30(above). we dropped the pan and it was full of clutch debris. I am having to install a rebuilt transmission and i only have 120K mileage.Drop the pan first and look at the vitals. hope this helps.

2000/Z71 w/ 4L60E - 90% of the time everything is fine, 10% of the time after 20 to 30 min of driving 1st to 2nd shift is very hard and 2nd to 3rd is slightly hard but 3rd to 4th is normal. Once truck cools off everthing is normal.

I have a 1993 G20/Mark III Chevy Conversion Van. Has a rebuilt engine and tranny with about 15K on the rebuild. It sat for months with a for sale sign before I bought it. Drives great around town but if I take it on the highway for over an hour when I pull off and drive in traffic it will not shift out of 2nd gear. Also using the cruise it will never go into passing gear going up a gradual grade. It will decelerate to 35mph and pedal to the floor without hitting passing gear. Park it for an hour or so and she's fine. Can't correlate the issue with anything other than highway driving using the cruise and passing gear. Any advice is appreciated

i have a 97 chevy burban and its been a great truck. i need someone to be honest with me, im a single mom of 4 and no money to blow on guessing games or the shady mechanics out there. i was driving my truck and slowed going up an onramp to the highway, there was a clunk then nothing. i lost all forward gears and now only have reverse. ive dropped the tranny pan and found a small amount of shavings and a few larger pieces and a few cylinder looking bearings. I was told i might just be able to replace the solenoids and filter. but others said i might as well scrap my truck. PLEASE! any help is welcome!

I have a 93 1500 with 122K. Just replaced the u joints a week ago and started hearing squeeking sound when in drive but not in reverse. Next day started in reverse also and got really loud. My rear seal has a small leak and I thought that it what was causing the problem but now am not sure. I am afraid it might be something internal but dont know. Need help, this is my only ride.

I have a 1998 jimmy with a fresh rebuilt 4l60e. The problem I am having is it seem like the brakes are on all the time and when you really step on the throttle it starts to backfire and seems like it does not want to shift but once your are up to speed it seems fine but then the rpms start to surge up and down about 200rpm after 60km/h

1993 gmc surburban shift hard going to second gear, after that shift fine in rest of the gears
Posted @ Thursday, October 20, 2011 12:58 AM by reginald
I have a 2005 chevy 1500 4x4, my truck will not hit second gear, it shifts directly into 3rd after I have enough speed out of 1st gear and let off the throttle. It then feels like it goes into second gear and directly Ito 3rd. Manual shifting won't work it just slips in second! But when the tranny is cold in the mornings it shifts a little better, gets wits the longer I drive it... Any help would be appreciated thank you

i have a 96 gmc sonoma and it doing as it was descibed on the website my question is do u know where the PCM is on my truck?(12.

I have a 2004 Tahoe Z71 5.3 flex fuel. Last night the Tahoe shifted in to neutral and just stopped pulling, It also made a ticking sound when we tried to put in park it went but would roll like it was in neutral. Towed it home shifted in 4WD pulled forward and shifted fine. Came out two hours later and it was doing fine in 2WD like nothing was wrong... Any Ideas?

is it possible to hook the second gear band up thruogh the servo, if so how ?
Posted @ Thursday, October 27, 2011 11:20 PM by Travis Day
this is for the previous comment, I have a 93 silverado, I bought the truck, and the last owner said all i would have to do is take the servo out and pull the second gear band back down, well i have the servo off, and i dont see what he is talking about, stuck without a truck. no slipping just no 2nd or 4th gear

I have a 2001 GMC YukonXL with a 5.3 liter VORTEC. It is the 4L60E had it rebuilt in 2010 by a useless mechanic. He wound up rebuilding the trans 3 diffrent times, because he wasn't doing something right. I towed it to a very reputable mechanic (DSU PETERBUILT(GM SMALL TRUCK SERVICES). They ran every test possible, and sed it wasnt toe ecm or anything else. The guy rebuilt it again, but there is a "surge" around 45-50 mph, and it "surges" between 1200-1400 rpm's. The trans is acting like it is trying to downshift. Or go into a higher gear when it doesn't need to. I am going to put a second trans in this vehical because i love it so much. I would really like to put a tougher beefier trans in it but i can't get a strait answer on what will work. I would love to replace the 4L60 with a 4L80E, or something way tougher. The (5.3liter(325 c.i.d.) has more than enough power to properly run the 4L80. Ijust need to know what i have to change up "electronically" for it to work. or if i can just plug and go. I would really appreciate a prompt answer on these querries. Thank you so very much for your time and attention. Mechanically Confused, JOSIAH HUNT

have 99 suburban 4x4 4l60e transmission that just lost all gears driving down the freeway. turned off motor and waited a minute and started truck up and shifted into gear and vehicle started to move and then every drops out again. seems like this will repeat itself. there was little to no warning of any transmission problem. the check engine light or flash code indicator never appeared to come on. i put tranny in myself 50,000 miles ago and it ran strong right til this happen last night. had to tow truck home and just going to look into problem now. there was a post with a 3 month old rebuild that had the identical problem. looking for the same solution.

I have a 99 Tahoe that shifts hard into reverse or 1st from park and is very slow when accelerating from a stop when the vehicle is cold. Once the vehicle is warmed up, the trans seems fine and none of the symptoms above exist.

I have a 2006 1500 Silverado 5.3 engine, 167,000 miles 4L60E transmission.

The transmissission shift from 1 to 3 and will not shift from 2 to 4. I scanned for codes and found A Solenoid code. I replaced the A & B Solenoids and changed filter and fluid ( fluid, filter& pan was clean) and cleared code. Tested and still have the same problem, but all codes are clear.

High performance rebuild 4L60E, all the goodies installed. Sticks in 2-3 shift when hard shifting 1-2. Works fine with soft shift 1-2. Reprogrammed trans to shift at 5500, rev limiter at 6500 to try to alleviate. Behaves when light load 1-2, hits rev limit then shifts when hard load 1-2. Doesn't throw codes. Any ideas?

I have a 95 blazer. Just swapped a new transmission for it. Switches through all gears but started to slip between 3-4 gear. I also noticed it was leaking transmission fluid but i am not sure from where. Could anyone help me with where it could be leaking from and why its leaking in the first place. Thank you

Will a faulty fuel pump cause the trans not to shift into passing gear? My transmission seems to be fine as long as no passing gear is required. The motor revs very high when the petal is pressed to the floor.

I have a 96 Chev. Blazer 4x4. Last night the Chev shifted in 4x4 while driving down the road. When I pulled into a parking lot to park up a slight hill, I had to give it a lot more gas. It still act like it didn't want to go so I placed the truck in reverse. Had to give more gas than normal. Once I put the truck in drive it still act like it didn't want to go. After turning the truck off for about an hour, I started the truck and the 4x4 light was on. Starting out in drive was differ but I had to drive about 12 miles home in 4x4. It drove ok but I knew all four wheels were turning. I would like to know what is wrong before I get a run around deal from a guessing game. To be frank with I don't have money to play with and I'm on a fixed income with a child to take care of.... O.. no other lights came on in the dash. Please Help....

4L60-E acting erratic, Over-Drive engages & dis-engages constantly with no throttle position change when cruzing at normal highway speeds (AU-110kph/US - 68mph), gear selection is poor & sometimes pushes foward when trying to stop at lights then hesitates when accelerating off from lights

Yes I have a 2000 silverado it's a really good truck but sometimes when I get on it hard from the start it gets up and moves just fine but when it shifts from first to second the transmission takes about a second before it switches over and it feels like it's out of wack and I would loose a race every time just because of that poorly shift and also it feels like it looses a little power also. I thought of getting a new transmission with a shift kit but if I don't need to then I won't. The transmission has 194k on it. And was also used for hauling and the person before me dogged it every chance he got with a trailer on it. What do I do?

I have a 1995 Chevy G10 Van,in 1st gear its feels like the brakes are applied. Had it tested to see if it was throwing any codes and it isn't,it was suggested to rebuild the tranny, so we bought a kit and did, found a couple gears that had a little wear on them. Put it back in and same thing. Anyone have any suggestion must get my work van back on the road ASAP!

I have a 02 GMC Sonoma ZR2 4x4 with a 4L60E. The problems I'm having are:

Shifts from Park to Reverse or Drive after the truck sits and cools down take power (1200RPM) to move the truck. Also my shifts are not from they are long and drawn out. Around 45-55 MPH my transmission acts like it can't find a gear jumping a few hundred RPM until I'm past 60 MPH then its fine. Also my tachometer is always around 2000-2200 RPM at highway speeds. To me that seems kinda high. Note tranny fluid and filter has been changed at scheduled intervals. Have the correct amount in tranny and fluid does not smell burnt. There is no grinding, clunking, or hard shifts. Thank you for your time. Local tranny shops have blown me off

Hard lesson learned. A 99 5.3L Tahoe 4L60E WILL NOT work on a 01 Silverado 4.8L. It bolts up just fine when you change the bell housing but, the torque converter, input shaft, and the pump are different. Dont waste your time!!

I recently had my 460E rebuilt with all new parts. I've noticed at 65-70 MPH when it down shifts sometimes it revs to 4000 rpms and gears slip then the clutches grab and starts pulling. It has larger Corvette servo and torque converter locks in overdrive. I was told it could be a faulty throttle body. It has extra clutches in 3rd 4th gear pack. What should I check for? Did I get a bad rebuild?

Did they change all the soleniods or just the shift soleniods? the frist thing you have to ck is the 3-2 downshift soleniod maybe faulty if not sounds like the vavle body could have a cross leak

Hello, I have a 2001 S-10 LS 2WD with a 4.3L Vortec and a 4 spd automatic (I think its a 4L60E). The problem is that at times when put into reverse the truck doesn't reverse. Also, while driving on the freeway after its warmed up the RPM's increase but the MPH do not. Seems to be slipping! And finally, 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4 shifts are very slow when over 50% throttle. More so with 2-3 and very bad on all changes at WOT as if there's major slippage and it just can't hold on. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I just put a new engine in a 2001 S-10 Trailblazer, The transmission shifted fine prior to the engine swap. Now it will only shift from 1-2 manualy and free spins in in 3-4. What should I be looking for since I know it is a good transmission?

Here in Australia I have a 5.7 Gen 3 fitted with a 4L60E after having it re-built it now tries to lock the converter up momentarliy even when stationary with the selector left in Drive. It will even stall the car. Gearbox specialist has been working on it now for 6 weeks and can't figure out why, any help would be great

i have a kia sedona 2.9 auto. i have fitted a second hand engine, and a new oil pump in the gearbox. when pulling off it is very sluggish, like its pulling away in a higher gear. when it was in the brake roller tester it wouldnt drive out, in low, drive, or reverse. the revs would only go up to 2000 or something, but if i put it into neutral, reved it and dropped it in drive it came out... as if something was limiting the revs at start off. it changes through the gears ok, and revs go higher when already driving. there is just no get up and go?? please help. steve

I am in Australia and have a 4L60E benhind a 5.7 litre Gen 3. After having it fully rebuilt the torque converter now tries to lock up momentarliy then releases once it gets hot. It does this continually making the car undriveable. It will even stall the car as you try and come to a stop.

When driving at high speed(70mph+), the transmission suddenly shifts down one gear. It will only shift back to normal when I accelerate or if it goes up an incline. It seems to occur after driving for 20min+. I have already replace the transmission control solenoids and it resolved the issue for a while but it went to doing it once again. The transmission was rebuilt less than a year ago and it made no difference. The dealership couldn't figure it out so they tried to sell me on a new transmission. Anyone have any ideas?

It shifts fine all the gears, until you try to pass some one.when you kickit down to go around it loses every thing, like its in neutral. but if you let off the peddle and push it again it goes into gear and shifts fine. would this be the tps?? and is it on the outside of the case?or is it something totally else?

I have a 90 Buick Elecktra T Type, my cousin was heading back to Seattle from Spokane, she stopped to fuel up and when she started it she shifted it into reverse, it wouldn't move, and it wouldnt move forward either in any gear. I measured the oil level before I started it, then measured it after, and the level went down telling me the pump was good. I then drained the oil and pulled the pan, it was surprisingly clean, no chunks of any kind just "normal" light wear evidence, a very little amount of material . i replaced the filter and the pan and oil still not going into gear. help

1996 k1500 4L60e 130000 miles, while driving the truck it slips or lags between about 2400rpm and 2800rpm when your accelerating fast, like passing. After that it picks right up and goes? shifts good, but over the years seems like it use to hold the gears to a higher rpm before shifting. Z71 transmission slips at 30 mph to a no engage situation. Shift down to low gear to move forward and again the transmission disengages. Shift down again to the very low gear and the transmission pulls like it should in the low gear.

Tight on cash. 2002 GMC Sonoma. I stopped at light, went to take off and heard a rubbing sound, high pitch. not really a grind to it. Put in park soon as I came to a stop. Shifted back in gear to see if noise would repeat. It didn't. However it looks as if I have no 4th? and once I got home from work found out I had no reverse either. Truck drove just fine but was about 3k on tac when typically coast around 2k on expressway. Wouldn't shift higher.

my 1993 g10 chevy 1/2 ton cargo van had a cracked windsheild, and a bad brake light bulb. I replace both and found that a leak had came down into the fuse block and caused corrossion in the block. I replaced the fuse block. Now there is a drain, a constant drain on the battery and transmission will not shift out 1st gear and maybe get locked into 2nd gear due to this drain. Is this problem in my wire harness in the steering wheel? My gauges are not working properly either.

My 02 Trailblazer would move ahead in first only to lock up upon the 1-2 shift. Speedo and R works. Didn't test 3 or 4 manual. I found the problem to be the lo sprag clutch. The inner raceway was shattered and there were sprag rollers and spring fragments adrift in the tranny. Training said the torque converter would soon be toast, too. So, I;m going with a beefed reman with a warranty.

I have a 97 GMC 1500 4X4. Trans was replaced 2 years ago with a brand new one. While out running errands, everything was fine. I came home to drop off a few things and when I got ready to leave, I backed up to turn around, then placed in drive and headed out. I made it about 100 yards and then it acted as if I shifted into neutral. I pulled the truck home, cranked it up about an hour later and it went into gear but only pulled for about 20 seconds. If the truck sits for a while, it will pull, but only for a minute or two. I also tried letting the truck idle about 10 min without putting it in gear and then trying and it would not move at all. Is it time to rebuild or what should I check first?

I have a 1997 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup with a 4L60E that i had re-built from a transmision shop. It lasted a month and the transmission started slipping in over-drive then lost over-drive, then lost 3rd gear, then 2nd. I scanned for codes, there were none. I took the transmission out and tore down at the repair shop and he said the transmission got hot. We did not pull anything with the truck just normal driving for one month. He diagnosed that the transmission got hot and took the front clutches out. There were no hot spots on the tork converter but he found thrush washers melted on the unit. He will not cover warranty on transmission because of overheating is it possible that he put it together wrong or do i have other problems that i can't find. This has been overhauled in the last 5 years and having the same problems.

Thanks for the post, and I'll be honest about that I know nothing about cars. And a few days ago I noticed a burning smell coming from my car. And I went to http://www.nationaltransmission.ca to try and get help to see what the problem. And it can either be the transmission, or the brakes. And with the somewhat car knowledge that I have I think that it's my transmission.

I have a 2004 Gmc Yukon Xl 4x4 . The problem I'm having with it is I have to start off in either 1st or 2nd gear then once I get up to 10mph I can shift it to drive. I don't experience any slipping once I start driving but once I stop the truck I have to return the gear shift to 1st or 2nd. If I slow down under 20 mph I have to down shift in order to match the speed of the vehicle then up shift back to drive if not the trans will not engage.

I have some of the problems as stated about, I have an 94 truck 4x4. I rebuilt it about 40k miles ago, well the low plant bearing took a dump, and tore up the plant gears. Going to work it just stopped pulling, after it sat for a few moments it worked again, just go home, lost all gears again, let sat drove around the block, then lost gears again, so I put a guage on it and had about 80 lbs. pressure, then just started dropping to 0. Pulled out trans. Had debri in it but pump looked great, so did the steels and fibers, valve body had some crap in it, but not much, do you think the converter went bad, since everything else looks good. Thanks, Mark.

I have 2000 chevy Silverado, 5.3 l with a 4L60E transmission. Everything started after I drove the truck for about 400 miles, I arrived at home with no problems, no slipping whatsoever, after several days, I used it again and the first thing I noticed was that the Check engine and the ABS lights stayed on, I thought it may needed brakes, I put it in R, no problem there, then I shifted to D and noticed right of way that I needed more gas to move forward, it seemed like I was taking on 3rd gear. I took the truck for a test drive and notices that moving on D it wouldn't shift up or down, I went up to 70 miles and my RPM went to 3000 RPM something I never saw before. I tried to shift manually, L1 it seemed like it was on 2nd gear, moved to L2, no change stayed on the same gear, moved it L3 and went up kind of hard, finally moved it to D and no change, apparently only 2nd and 3rd gears were available. I connected diagnostic device and it threw the Shift Solenoid B, I opened the transmission and there was no signs of metal flakes, clutch flakes neither pieces of metal, just the brown dust like from normal wear and tear. I changed both A and B Solenoids, used the same oil because it looked fine, right color, no burnt odors; went for a test drive and same thing, no change, I took it to a shop and it threw the a problem with a TCC. In other words I'm missing 1th and 4th gears. Do I need an overhaul or it may be an electrical problem?
Posted @ Tuesday, March 26, 2013 8:29 PM by
Like the March 26th 2013 posting, my 2000 Silverado now contains two new shift solenoids that I replaced in an attempt to get it to stop rapidly jumping back and forth between 3rd and 4th under a very light load. This did not fix the issue. Could I be miss interpreting the symptoms? Could it actually be slipping, all be it, very roughly in a jerking manner insteadof shifting back and forth?

When I come down the hill and flatten out on lvl ground the trans seems to slip out of overdrive and rmps will raise sometimes to around 3000 before it drops down into a lower gear. When it starts to slip like this if I punch the pedal to the floor it will hit passing gear, I let of the peddle and it will go back into overdrive and run fine until I hit slight hills again. On the 96 camaro z28 automatic this problem is due to low planetary gears in the transmission. You can certainly give me a call if you still have questions, I have been out of the shop for a few weeks and am playing catch up so sorry for the late reply! Dan 650-270-4949

1993 2X4 S10 Blazer, 3.8L V6, 4L60E transmission.

Transmission used to work perfectly, then one day I was testing a new engine rebuild and had the vehicle in reverse with the brake pedal pressed. I was trying to see if the engine would overheat in gear and I was using reverse so I wouldn't accidentally let go of the brake and ram the garage (I know now that this was not the best idea). I gave the engine just the tiniest amount of acceleration while holding my foot on the brake and POP! No more reverse!

I researched the issue and discovered that it was the sunshell. I ordered an upgraded model (the beast) and carefully disassembled the transmission and replaced the sunshell. I got everything back together and now I have a new problem.

The transmission works perfectly except for the following... When driving in OD or D the transmission shifts normally while accelerating and while at speed, but upon slowing down the transmission seems to get stuck in 2nd gear and barely shifts into 1st before the engine dies. At a stop, if I run through the gears everything shifts fine until I get to 2nd. As soon as I place the gear selector in the 2nd position (It takes about a second) it kills the engine.

I'm not sure if I damaged something else when I originally broke it, or if I just put something back together incorrectly. I hope that since the issue seems to be pretty specific someone will know right away what the issue is.

Thanks!

It will not shift into 3rd, the old one did it and that is why i replaced it. all my connections look good, the harness looked good while i had the tranny out. it shifted fine for a while then it quit while i was driving and went into 2nd. 3rd neutrals out. Any Ideas?

I have 99 4wd silverado with the 4l60e. Traded for truck after a family memeber did a trans swap in it for a known working trans. When I get it the truck is slow to shift to second around 3500 rpm and I have no overdrive. Underneath I noticed that they messed up the shift cable going to the linkage it doesn't allow the truck to go into park. So I have to get underneath it and push the linkage to the park position to start the truck. Could this have an effect on the computer not knowing when to shift or maybe not knowing what gear its in. Causing my slow shift into 2nd and no overdrive.

Periodically forward gears will not engage after starting until I put it in reverse, then all gears work fine. No noise or shifting problems, hot or cold. Replaced position sensor on tranny, no difference.

I built a Chev 5.3l V8 with a 4L60E transmission into a jeep wrangler with a 79 model Ford F250's transfer case and axles. Also with 35" tyres.

When I pull away in D-mode or in 1st manually it seems like its in a high gear and the motor struggles to get the jeep going. It seems like it pulls away in a high gear. Is that possible? How can I Fix this. I already got someone else's map settings, but his 4L60E is in a Chev Belair. Does still the same thing.

Can someone give me some advice please?

Tranny fixed. The park position pawl has worn bushings and every so often they get wedged. Putting it in reverse relieved the tension on the drum/ pawl and let it drop away. I had to loosen and move slightly the bracket that holds the mechanism inside the tranny to allow free movement. The eventual fix is to open the entire tranny to get to the drum and lever in the back of housing. Just when you think you've seen it all.

I've driven GM vehicles over 50 years and averaged 40,000 plus a year. Some as much as 282,792 miles, servicing as recommended. Bottom line on 97.3% percent of problems with the 4L60E tranny can be solved by replacement with a mechanic that guarantees his work for at least 2 years and replaces the transmission with a remanufactured vs a rebuild. Short of that fix it as cheap as you can and sell the vehicle, immediately. The 4L60E is a cheap light weight tranny, engineered and built now to make it to 100,000 miles in a GM product, 60,000 in a Ford or Honda. Any more mileage than as described is borrowed time. Never buy a used (salvaged)over these mileages unless you are going to sell the vehicle immediately or you have money to burn, Be honest with yourself....

I have a 1996 Chevrolet Suburban that had the trans rebuild about 10,000 miles ago with a new engine. It seems every time I fill up with gas the tranny feels weird like not shifting in all gears. After about 100 miles or less it goes back to normal and drives great. Any ideas I'm stumped on this one.

Having a problem with my 2004 GMC Savana 3500 6.0 with 4L60E. Current mileage is 75k and was serviced (filter/fluid) at 50k. Seems to be activated after/during shifting into overdrive (felt while accelerating in OD), but is noticed more after coming to a stop and taking off again then it shifts hard from 1-2 & 2-3. However, once this happens and I pull over and shut off the engine for 10+ seconds (resetting the computer) the hard shifting goes away till going back into overdrive and coming to a stop again. I have drove it in (3 instead of D) and no problems, so it appears to be triggered while in or shifting within overdrive. Any thoughts...

Dealer wants to replace with a rebuild (4k) and other shop wants to take it out for inspection/rebuild (2-3k). Seems to me that the problem is some sort of malfunctioning/damaged solenoid. Being that it is cleared after a 10+ second power down of the vehicle leads to believe that the computer is involved with a senor reporting and then causing a ramp up of fluid pressure to cause the hard shift. The fluid is clear of any noticeable debris.

I have a 1991 Silverado k1500 4x4 The 10 Amp EMC fuse blew when I was driving it. Replaced the fuse but now the 4x4 light doesn't light. The Actuator engauges the 4 wheel drive but it won't light. Also the Transmission shifts hard. All the gears are there but it wont shift till you get around 3000 RPM. I dropped the trans. pan to find a little gray on the magnet but nothing else. The fluid doesn't look bad reddish brown. It doesn't smell burnt. Maybe The problem with the 4x4 indicator light and EMC fuse blowing is unrelated. Any Ideas what is causing the hard long Shifting? Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Last night I put it in reverse and no response, put it in park, made a grinding/gear slipping sound. Put it back in reverse and it backed up. Ok, so I'm thinking probably low fluid. This morning i put it in reverse, nothing. Tried 4 wheel drive and got a response, backed out, put it in drive, good to go. Headed to get fluid after i hit the gym, it "dropped" or "slipped" out of gear twice, luckily i only went a mile to the gym and was able to coast into a parking spot. After the gym, hit quicktrip for some ATF, the tranny cooler line has leaked for a while, so i figured it was just low. Added some fluid, since it was cold i didnt trust the dipstick, but added some tranny fluid. Got in, started up, drove it about 100' through the parking lot and it slipped out again. I put it in park and it made that sound again. I got it to go into drive and parked it. later i went back, dropped it in reverse, nothing. put it in 4 wheel drive and got it to back up to a better parking spot. Any ideas???

U-joints good torque converter and flex plate good. Can feel it shift in gear and at 4000 rpm my speedo goes to 4-5mph. Removed driveshaft and speedo goes 40-50mph. Rear end not locked up wheels roll freely.

I have 94 Chevy pickup with a 4.3 and what I think is a 4L60 trans. It seems to be all original. I bought the truck with the trans. not working,so I don't know how it acted when it stopped working but it will not do anything at all in any gear or make any noise just nothing. I have rebuilt three Turbo 350's in the past but they were just slipping. I was wondering if you would point me in the right direction on this project? I have the trans. out and would like to fix it myself, but don't want to throw away 300 or 400 buck and then have to take it to someone to be fixed. It sounds like in the troubleshooting section you have, it may be the pump. The fluid is burn and it looks like a clutch material in the pan. What do think and how much different are these than a Turbo 350? Thanks, Donnie

I have a'94 Silverado 1500. While driving (50mph) my OD and drive went bonkers. 1st,2nd and reverse work fine. When truck is cold all gears work, but after 5-10 minutes the motor just revs in OD or D.If moved to 2nd manually truck runs fine. If transmission needs a rebuild is it safe to drive in 2nd (going slow)? I will have to take it to the big city which is 54 miles with a couple of medium grades. I really need some good advice. Thank you.

have a 1994 GMC Sierra K1500 with a 4L60E transmission. Has a difficult time shifting around 45 MPH into what I guess is 4th gear. If you back off and/or "feather" the gas pedal, it will eventually shift and run fine at high speeds. Changed the filter and fluid. I have a 1995 k1500 with the 4L60 tranny truck has 260k miles on it. Never been rebuilt as far as I. Have to back off the gas to shift from 1-2 which sounds like its the TPS, PCM, etc problem that you guys say. Also it gets pretty hot it seems to shift worse the more you drive it. Will not shift down when climbing a hill so I end up going 45-50mph after long hills. As I understand 1995 has a few things that are unique to that exact year so I was curious as to what my best diagnose route was and if something from that year was more prone to go out than others? I believe one of the unique things was the pcm. Thanks for the help.

Now the truck only drives in OD but you can shift through the gears manually. Is this electrical or something more severe? Any help will be greatly appreciated

i have an envoy 2003 with a 6-cylinder engine and 4l60E trasmission, i rebuilt the transmission 4 months ago, after 2 months i had a problem with the generator(alternator) so i was obliged to jump the car for few times, after i repaired the generator, the car was in limph mode and the shift A solenoid was damaged. i repaired it. 1 month later the transmission pump was broken, i repaired it also. and now i have a delay during the shifts from 2nd to 3rd and a little of slipping, i replaced the solenoids after 15 minutes the solenoids are damaged again, and the problem has returned. someone has told me i need a new transmission. can anyone help me with this problem? is it an electrical problem? or it's the transmission? how i can solve it? it's been 4 months i have problem with this transmission.

So it started with a mis fire issue found out it was a loose distributor, now thinking all was well my 1998 Suburban did it again, while pulling a hill with a car load of people and camping gear it started shaking almost like it was a manual transmission and you put it in to high of a gear. Buth aside from that the transmission seems to shift fine 1-4 or at least It seems that way also I am noticing a whine going down the road now. Any suggestions? ideas would be appreciated
thanks

2000 Chevy blazer, what can cause a squeaking noise from the transmission? I recently did a motor swap (same 4.3L) and as soon as I turned the truck on it was fine, I put it into gear and the squeaking started. Now every time I turn the truck on it makes that noise, even in park, also there was a small amount of smoke coming out of the trans dust cover(left it open in cause of a problem)

Hello I have a 95 1500 Chevy Silverado. I have had the tranny rebuilt three times now. But just recently it seems to not want to shift into 4th gear. When I try to drive above 50mps, the RPM's just continue up and the tranny wont shift. I was wondering if this could be anything to do with the computer or if i need to have the tranny looked at again. Thank You.
