4L60E Transmission Rebuild | Charlotte NCWhat is a 4L60E Transmission?

The 4L60-E is an automatic shift, four-speed overdrive, longitudinally positioned transmission. It has been considered to be the best rendition of the finest overdrive automatic transmission ever produced. The 4L60-E is found in nearly every GM rear-wheel-drive application, including the C/K Truck, Sonoma, Jimmy, Tahoe, Yukon, Astro, Safari, Suburban, Bravada, Firebird, Camaro and Corvette

Before the Late 4L60-E transmission, there was the Turbo 700R, which was introduced in 1982. The 4L60-E is GM's successful continuation of the ever-improving 700R4 (aka "4L60" since 1990), introduced in 1982. The 4L60-E is the "E"lectronically shift controlled version of the 4L60. The Late 4L60-E was released in 1997 in and fully phased into wide use through GM by 1998 in both RWD car platforms (including the C6 Corvette) and trucks in both 2wd and 4wd configurations. (Most transmission models are not distinctively noted with the "E" since all GM transmissions are now also controlled electronically.)

The 4L60E Transmission has went through many changes/improvements over the years since it first came out in 1982. From bells to valve bodies, added solenoids, changes in pump and convertors. The 4L60E transmission weighs 146 pounds dry, and 162 wet. It requires 8.4 quarts (9.64" torque converter) or 11.4 quarts (11.81" torque converter) of transmission fluid,

Top 30 Common 4L60E Transmission Problems and Repair

Below is a list of common transmission problems with the GM 4L60E Transmission and possible solutions to repair. Although you may have some of these symptoms / problems with your 4L60E Transmission, the repair solution may differ. This list is merely a guide to the possible solutions. For a complete diagnosis on your GM 4L60E Transmission problem, contact us for a Free Diagnostic.

1. Slow, slipping or no reverse: “lo-reverse” clutches are worn out, fluid leak in the reverse apply circuit, or broken sunshell. It is possible to remedy a fluid problem by removing the checkball from its cage in the case in the rear of the transmission may help (must remove valve body), or adding a high-viscosity additive or other seal restorer product. May also have worn boost valve (can replace in the pan).

2. 1-2 shift does not happen at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) until you let off the gas: Best case: try replacing the TPS. Middle case: leak in the 2nd gear apply circuit (servo assembly or 1-2 accumulator). Double check by using the pressure gauge and watch for a big drop when the PCM commands 2nd gear. Worst case: poor line pressure rise (see below).

3. 1-2 Shift shudder at WOT (Wide Open Throttle); delayed or abnormal 1-2 shift; There's a problem ONLY on the 1-2 shift: 1-2 accumulator piston cracked or stuck cocked in the bore. Check the yellow spring inside the accum housing for breakage. Also, if the accumulator housing walls are scored, the housing must be replaced.

4. 1-2 shift is delayed and harsh, may not shift into OD: TPS needs to be checked for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If not, this must be replaced.

5. Trans does not upshift out of first, speedometer reads zero at all times: Could be VSS failure. Rear of transmission needs to be fixed. Transmission needs to come out in order to access VSS.

6. No 3rd or 4th gear: “3-4” clutches are worn out: Needs to be removed and rebuilt. The car is safe to drive (in 2) until you can get it fixed.

7. Sudden grinding noise with no prior warning primarily in 2nd gear, behavior in reverse may be abnormal: sunshell is fractured. Must be removed and rebuilt. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

8. 1st and 3rd only, no 2,4 or R: Sunshell is fractured or splines are sheared off. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

9. No 2nd or 4th gear. 2-4 band is slipping: Servo seals may be damaged. Otherwise, 2-4 band is worn out. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt.

10. Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the underhood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.

11. No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter: ShiftA solenoid failed Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans or PCM. Needs diagnostic testing.

12. Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: A wiring problem from PCM to transmission or PCM.

13. No TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) lockup: Brake pedal switches improperly adjusted (always on), TCC solenoid failed, TCC clutch worn out (must remove transmission and replace TC).

14. TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) always locked: TCC apply solenoid circuit shorted to ground, TCC solenoid blockage, or TC broken (must remove trans and replace TC).

15. Horrible noise in 4th and feels like the brakes are on: overrun clutches are applying due to a cracked or leaking forward piston. Overrun clutches will be worn out after 30 seconds of this behavior. Car can be safely driven in D. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt.

16. Soft shifting, gradual performance degradation: Poor line pressure rise due to leaking boost valve, clogged EPC filter screen, failing EPC solenoid, or worst case: leaky seals throughout. Seal restorer may fix last problem, but probably remove and rebuild needed.

17. No forward movement in OD or D, but L2, L1 and R work: Forward sprag is broken. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.

18. Extremely harsh shifts from P or N, normal shifts at WOT: EPC (Electronic Pressure Control) solenoid failed. Fix as soon as possible or hard parts will eventually break.

19. Loud bang, grinding sound, loss of all gears, and a binding driveshaft: Snapped output shaft. Try to wiggle driveshaft - if more than 0.020" play, that's the sign. Must be removed and transmission rebuilt.

20. Trans seems noisy when moving in 1st and Reverse, noise goes away instantly if you shift to N or the transmission goes into 3rd gear: Reaction planetary is worn out due to high miles or insufficient lubrication. Not a critical failure, but not a good sign either. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt, sooner rather than later.

21. No movement in any gear: pump failure, or total loss of fluid. Remove transmission and rebuild, or refill pan and find the leak. If out of fluid, avoid running the engine until the transmission is refilled to avoid pump damage. To check for pump failure, check fluid level with the engine off, then start the engine and recheck fluid level. If level does not go down when engine is running, the pump is broken.

22. Transmission does not shift automatically, only manually. New PCM, check wiring, check other sensors such as VSS and TPS.

23. 3rd gear starts, can manually shift through all gears. When car has been turned off for a bit, then back on it will run normally.: VSS dropoff w/ Hi-stall converter. The rpms are too high, but VSS is showing no movement. Happens after a tire burning take-off. Doesn't store a code, will not throw a CEL (I've heard that it will store a code if it happens 3 or more times). Cure: Reprogram PCM for VSS dropoff.

24. Fluid leak out of the front of trans where the converter connects; partial or full loss of movement: Front pump bushing walked out. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt. May have to replace converter also if hub is scored. Note that a leaking front seal usually means the bushing is walking out.

25. Torque converter shudder in 4th while lockup is engaged; problem goes away when the brake pedal is pressed slightly to unlock converter: Need to verify line pressure, and provided no valves in the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) hydraulic circuit are worn, replace the torque converter.

26. Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check TPS for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS (Throttle position sensor).

27. All fluid pumped out through the vent tube: Plugged cooler line. Flush the transmission cooler and cooler lines. Also could be overfiled transmission.

28. Car acts like it's in OD in neutral, car is locked stationary in R, engine feels loaded in P, all four forward positions work fine: Transmission must be removed and rebuilt. Internal crossleak feeding the forward clutches all the time. Most likely a cracked input housing, or cracked forward piston means forward clutches are fused together. Car can safely be driven gently in forward gears until the repair.

29. Needle bearings in the pan, first gear and/or reverse may be noisy: Either a torrington bearing or a planetary bearing is on its way out. Transmission will eventually die a loud, catastrophic death. Cheaper to rebuild now (saves further damage to hard parts), but requires removal and rebuild. It is drivable until it breaks.

30. 1-2 or 2-3 shift is slow/soft above part throttle: Transmission is on its way out. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt.

I'm building a 400 SBC to put in my short wheel base full size truck. It has a nice 4L60E in it now. Is this transmission OK for this application? Does it need a shift kit?

I have a 92 GMC Sierra 1500 4X4 I just recently rebuilt my 4l60e cause of loss of 1st gear but when I rebuilt it everything looked great all the steel and gears looked good seals and band great condition so me and my brother in law re did it all in about a week after work I bought a whole new rebuilt kit for around $125got a teflon band and everything we checked the pressure to see if it all was well and made extra sure everything worked after all that hard work we put everything back together and back in in a days work come to find out same darn problem what could it be he thought the torque converter was bad even before reverse was normal but 1st gear always felt sluggish and it didn't have that power it had before and never got out of 1st gear it seemed. it was a tad low in fluid but knowing how bad it was slipping fluid couldn't be the problem what are somethings I could look into doing at this point with a newly rebuilt tray but still having the same problem is it the torque converter??? is it a bad PCM or what I'm lost and need my everyday transportation back up and running ASAP I've poured just about all my dough in a overhaul kit I didn't need cause everything looked good so if anyone can help me or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it

I have a 96 blazer with the 4l60e. When i put my truck in reverse my vehicle shudders badly for a bit until i give it half throttle, it also acts like the breaks are beaing aplled. But doesnt in any other gear. I can remove my tranmission fuse in dashboard and it doesnt shudder. I also have a leak somewhere on top of it on passenger side. This has puzzled alot of mechanics and none can give a answer.
Posted @ Thursday, July 07, 2011 5:57 PM by Jason bowers
transmission shudders when converter is locked up in 3rd. only does this in third and only when shift lever is placed in 3rd. shudder goes away when you give it gas and the converter unlocks.

I have a 1993 chevy truck 20,000 0n rebuilt 4l60-e that lost 3-4 going at highway speed. 1-2 & reverse still work. Dropped pan and fluid was clean no debris at all just alittle clutch sludge in bottom of pan. My tps went out the day before and I replaced it. But now all scans look normal. Can a bad solinoid cause this issue? I belive this acts like electrical.

I have a 97 Tahoe. My transmission will only run in reverse. It will not give any error codes. If I unplug the harness the vehicle will function in 3rd gear. 1st and 2nd will not work not even in manual. The vehicle will actually pick up speed up to 50mph or more with no problem. If I plug the harness back in the vehicle will not run again and will only run in reverse. I've cleaned the harness and no luck. I get no error codes.

I have a 4L60E 1st and Reverse are the only Working Gears. Pulled the Transmission noticed that the 2\4th Band is Cracking and worn badly. Could this be the Problem ? Everything else seems ok. Havent pulled the ValveBody or anyof the Clutch Packs apart yet, although they appear to be ok and look new. Please advise.

just drove down to the beach pulling a small john boat. Lost 3rd and 4th gear and once it shifted into 3rd she went into neutral. After consulting with a great transmission mechanic he called out number 6 in the top 30(above). we dropped the pan and it was full of clutch debris. I am having to install a rebuilt transmission and i only have 120K mileage.Drop the pan first and look at the vitals. hope this helps.

2000/Z71 w/ 4L60E - 90% of the time everything is fine, 10% of the time after 20 to 30 min of driving 1st to 2nd shift is very hard and 2nd to 3rd is slightly hard but 3rd to 4th is normal. Once truck cools off everthing is normal.

I have a 1993 G20/Mark III Chevy Conversion Van. Has a rebuilt engine and tranny with about 15K on the rebuild. It sat for months with a for sale sign before I bought it. Drives great around town but if I take it on the highway for over an hour when I pull off and drive in traffic it will not shift out of 2nd gear. Also using the cruise it will never go into passing gear going up a gradual grade. It will decelerate to 35mph and pedal to the floor without hitting passing gear. Park it for an hour or so and she's fine. Can't correlate the issue with anything other than highway driving using the cruise and passing gear. Any advice is appreciated

i have a 97 chevy burban and its been a great truck. i need someone to be honest with me, im a single mom of 4 and no money to blow on guessing games or the shady mechanics out there. i was driving my truck and slowed going up an onramp to the highway, there was a clunk then nothing. i lost all forward gears and now only have reverse. ive dropped the tranny pan and found a small amount of shavings and a few larger pieces and a few cylinder looking bearings. I was told i might just be able to replace the solenoids and filter. but others said i might as well scrap my truck. PLEASE! any help is welcome!

I have a 93 1500 with 122K. Just replaced the u joints a week ago and started hearing squeeking sound when in drive but not in reverse. Next day started in reverse also and got really loud. My rear seal has a small leak and I thought that it what was causing the problem but now am not sure. I am afraid it might be something internal but dont know. Need help, this is my only ride.

I have a 1998 jimmy with a fresh rebuilt 4l60e. The problem I am having is it seem like the brakes are on all the time and when you really step on the throttle it starts to backfire and seems like it does not want to shift but once your are up to speed it seems fine but then the rpms start to surge up and down about 200rpm after 60km/h

1993 gmc surburban shift hard going to second gear, after that shift fine in rest of the gears
Posted @ Thursday, October 20, 2011 12:58 AM by reginald
I have a 2005 chevy 1500 4x4, my truck will not hit second gear, it shifts directly into 3rd after I have enough speed out of 1st gear and let off the throttle. It then feels like it goes into second gear and directly Ito 3rd. Manual shifting won't work it just slips in second! But when the tranny is cold in the mornings it shifts a little better, gets wits the longer I drive it... Any help would be appreciated thank you

i have a 96 gmc sonoma and it doing as it was descibed on the website my question is do u know where the PCM is on my truck?(12.

I have a 2004 Tahoe Z71 5.3 flex fuel. Last night the Tahoe shifted in to neutral and just stopped pulling, It also made a ticking sound when we tried to put in park it went but would roll like it was in neutral. Towed it home shifted in 4WD pulled forward and shifted fine. Came out two hours later and it was doing fine in 2WD like nothing was wrong... Any Ideas?

is it possible to hook the second gear band up thruogh the servo, if so how ?
Posted @ Thursday, October 27, 2011 11:20 PM by Travis Day
this is for the previous comment, I have a 93 silverado, I bought the truck, and the last owner said all i would have to do is take the servo out and pull the second gear band back down, well i have the servo off, and i dont see what he is talking about, stuck without a truck. no slipping just no 2nd or 4th gear

I have a 2001 GMC YukonXL with a 5.3 liter VORTEC. It is the 4L60E had it rebuilt in 2010 by a useless mechanic. He wound up rebuilding the trans 3 diffrent times, because he wasn't doing something right. I towed it to a very reputable mechanic (DSU PETERBUILT(GM SMALL TRUCK SERVICES). They ran every test possible, and sed it wasnt toe ecm or anything else. The guy rebuilt it again, but there is a "surge" around 45-50 mph, and it "surges" between 1200-1400 rpm's. The trans is acting like it is trying to downshift. Or go into a higher gear when it doesn't need to. I am going to put a second trans in this vehical because i love it so much. I would really like to put a tougher beefier trans in it but i can't get a strait answer on what will work. I would love to replace the 4L60 with a 4L80E, or something way tougher. The (5.3liter(325 c.i.d.) has more than enough power to properly run the 4L80. Ijust need to know what i have to change up "electronically" for it to work. or if i can just plug and go. I would really appreciate a prompt answer on these querries. Thank you so very much for your time and attention. Mechanically Confused, JOSIAH HUNT

have 99 suburban 4x4 4l60e transmission that just lost all gears driving down the freeway. turned off motor and waited a minute and started truck up and shifted into gear and vehicle started to move and then every drops out again. seems like this will repeat itself. there was little to no warning of any transmission problem. the check engine light or flash code indicator never appeared to come on. i put tranny in myself 50,000 miles ago and it ran strong right til this happen last night. had to tow truck home and just going to look into problem now. there was a post with a 3 month old rebuild that had the identical problem. looking for the same solution.

I have a 99 Tahoe that shifts hard into reverse or 1st from park and is very slow when accelerating from a stop when the vehicle is cold. Once the vehicle is warmed up, the trans seems fine and none of the symptoms above exist.

I have a 2006 1500 Silverado 5.3 engine, 167,000 miles 4L60E transmission.

The transmissission shift from 1 to 3 and will not shift from 2 to 4. I scanned for codes and found A Solenoid code. I replaced the A & B Solenoids and changed filter and fluid ( fluid, filter& pan was clean) and cleared code. Tested and still have the same problem, but all codes are clear.

High performance rebuild 4L60E, all the goodies installed. Sticks in 2-3 shift when hard shifting 1-2. Works fine with soft shift 1-2. Reprogrammed trans to shift at 5500, rev limiter at 6500 to try to alleviate. Behaves when light load 1-2, hits rev limit then shifts when hard load 1-2. Doesn't throw codes. Any ideas?

I have a 95 blazer. Just swapped a new transmission for it. Switches through all gears but started to slip between 3-4 gear. I also noticed it was leaking transmission fluid but i am not sure from where. Could anyone help me with where it could be leaking from and why its leaking in the first place. Thank you

Will a faulty fuel pump cause the trans not to shift into passing gear? My transmission seems to be fine as long as no passing gear is required. The motor revs very high when the petal is pressed to the floor.

I have a 96 Chev. Blazer 4x4. Last night the Chev shifted in 4x4 while driving down the road. When I pulled into a parking lot to park up a slight hill, I had to give it a lot more gas. It still act like it didn't want to go so I placed the truck in reverse. Had to give more gas than normal. Once I put the truck in drive it still act like it didn't want to go. After turning the truck off for about an hour, I started the truck and the 4x4 light was on. Starting out in drive was differ but I had to drive about 12 miles home in 4x4. It drove ok but I knew all four wheels were turning. I would like to know what is wrong before I get a run around deal from a guessing game. To be frank with I don't have money to play with and I'm on a fixed income with a child to take care of.... O.. no other lights came on in the dash. Please Help....

4L60-E acting erratic, Over-Drive engages & dis-engages constantly with no throttle position change when cruzing at normal highway speeds (AU-110kph/US - 68mph), gear selection is poor & sometimes pushes foward when trying to stop at lights then hesitates when accelerating off from lights

Yes I have a 2000 silverado it's a really good truck but sometimes when I get on it hard from the start it gets up and moves just fine but when it shifts from first to second the transmission takes about a second before it switches over and it feels like it's out of wack and I would loose a race every time just because of that poorly shift and also it feels like it looses a little power also. I thought of getting a new transmission with a shift kit but if I don't need to then I won't. The transmission has 194k on it. And was also used for hauling and the person before me dogged it every chance he got with a trailer on it. What do I do?

I have a 1995 Chevy G10 Van,in 1st gear its feels like the brakes are applied. Had it tested to see if it was throwing any codes and it isn't,it was suggested to rebuild the tranny, so we bought a kit and did, found a couple gears that had a little wear on them. Put it back in and same thing. Anyone have any suggestion must get my work van back on the road ASAP!

I have a 02 GMC Sonoma ZR2 4x4 with a 4L60E. The problems I'm having are:

Shifts from Park to Reverse or Drive after the truck sits and cools down take power (1200RPM) to move the truck. Also my shifts are not from they are long and drawn out. Around 45-55 MPH my transmission acts like it can't find a gear jumping a few hundred RPM until I'm past 60 MPH then its fine. Also my tachometer is always around 2000-2200 RPM at highway speeds. To me that seems kinda high. Note tranny fluid and filter has been changed at scheduled intervals. Have the correct amount in tranny and fluid does not smell burnt. There is no grinding, clunking, or hard shifts. Thank you for your time. Local tranny shops have blown me off

Hard lesson learned. A 99 5.3L Tahoe 4L60E WILL NOT work on a 01 Silverado 4.8L. It bolts up just fine when you change the bell housing but, the torque converter, input shaft, and the pump are different. Dont waste your time!!

I recently had my 460E rebuilt with all new parts. I've noticed at 65-70 MPH when it down shifts sometimes it revs to 4000 rpms and gears slip then the clutches grab and starts pulling. It has larger Corvette servo and torque converter locks in overdrive. I was told it could be a faulty throttle body. It has extra clutches in 3rd 4th gear pack. What should I check for? Did I get a bad rebuild?

Did they change all the soleniods or just the shift soleniods? the frist thing you have to ck is the 3-2 downshift soleniod maybe faulty if not sounds like the vavle body could have a cross leak

My 06 Honda Odyssey's check emission light came on this morning and now it will not shift out of 1st gear. For a time, it has been a pausing feeling when it would shift from 1st to 2nd.

Seems like separate issues, with the emission light, but was wondering what could be going on with the transmission.
